Chicago

Hosted by The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project

The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 was the bloodiest episode of racial violence in the city’s history. 38 people were killed, 537 were injured, and more than a thousand left homeless in nearly a week of mass violence across large parts of the city. Yet despite its importance—as well as subsequent impact on the city’s development—very few people have heard about this event. Fewer still know the details or its larger significance. The route you’re about to travel is designed by the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project (CRR19) while was founded to raise awareness about the importance of this event. CRR19 offers tours by bike, bus, and foot throughout the year. This tour is designed to take you to some locations connected to the 1919 riot, its profound legacies (including residential segregation) as well as a few places that demonstrate Bronzeville's resilient, vibrant Black community. Given the tour's total distance, we recommend doing this tour by bike or car. While we love delivering historic tours, another core component of the CRR19 project is public art. For each of the 38 people killed, we've partnered with Firebird Community Arts, a local, social justice art studio, to design and create 38 glass markers--one for each of the 38 people killed. The markers are shaped like a brick because bricks were used as weapons during the events we explore. Each marker is installed at or near the approximate location someone was killed in 1919. A few of our tour stops are at locations where our markers are installed. Our all-volunteer operation gladly accepts tax-deductive donations, thanks! https://chicagoraceriot.org/donate/
