This tour, designed by local foodie and adventurer, Katie Carole, takes you through the Lakeview East neighborhood of Chicago to 4 must-visit coffee shops and ice cream parlors along bustling Broadway. One has been around since 1975 and others opened recently in 2023. Recommendations are made for you but you can of course, order whatever you'd like or just pop your head in to see what the place is all about.

Wrigley Field opened in 1914, and while its interior has changed minimally much over the years - even with the many remodeling sessions it's undergone - its exterior has received a makeover to honor the Cubs' most amazing players and celebrate their most beloved fans. This tour guides you around Wrigley Field to see the statues of Harry Caray and Ron Santo, the newly remodeled Gallagher Way, and the bricks that are engraved with the names of fans. Are you ready to learn about Wrigley?

This Adventure is a walking tour around the exterior of Wrigley Field and best to start under the famous marquee at the northeast corner of Clark and Addison. This tour does not include anything inside of the ballpark and a game ticket is not required to participate in this Adventure. Play anytime, especially on non-game days when there are less crowds. Go Cubs!

One of the most iconic aspects of Wrigley Field is its marquee, which has displayed the starting time and game scores for the next Cubs game for over 80 seasons. If you're ot already at the marquee, hit the map icon in the upper right corner of your screen, to display a map for directions. If you ever need directions to any stop during this Adventure, just hit the map icon!

During the 1930s, ticket sales were quite low at Wrigley Field. The Chicago Cubs needed to get people into the park, but few were interested in doing so since the park was surrounded by dust, coal, and other industrial buildings. It wasn’t the most pleasant place to go, so the Cubs decided something bright and eye-catching needed to be added to the exterior. The marquee was commissioned and installed by the Federated Sign Company of Chicago in 1934. The green sign read “Wrigley Field, Home of the Cubs” and its effect was instant. More people began to flock to Wrigley Field and return to the park for other events. 

In 1939 the Marquee was painted Cubbie blue and its message was changed to “Wrigley Field, Home of Chicago Cubs”. Once the baseball season ended the Chicago Bears would take over Wrigley Field, leading to the sign to say “Wrigley Field, Home of Chicago Bears”, until 1970, when "Da Bears" moved to Soldier Field. In 1960 the Marquee was painted its familiar Cubbie Red color and in 1980 the sign received an LED message board. After briefly being painted purple in 2010 for a Northwestern foodball game (see pic 3), the Marquee was removed from its post in 2016 and restored, receiving neon lights, a new display board, and a fresh coat of paint. The back of the Marquee was also painted green to blend in with the rest of the stadium. Watch the video to learn more about the marquee's history.

"Home of Chicago Cubs"

Now, head up the east side of Clark Street with Wrigley Field on your right staying on the Wrigley block. Look for a giant sign that says 'Gallagher Way' and head towards it. Gallagher Way is one of the newest additions to Wrigley Field, and has quickly become a place for community events, festivals, delicious food, and a great place to watch the Cubbies! 

Gallagher, the company, was started by Arthur J. Gallagher, a Chicago businessman and insurance broker. The firm opened in Chicago in 1927 with an insurance, risk management solutions, and business consultation portfolio. In 2018, Gallagher purchased the naming rights of the green space for an undisclosed amount and time which includes the ballpark’s Western Gate and left field bullpen door. 

The way's destination now welcomes fans and provides food, shops, and fun year-round, turning the area into an effective tourist destination. Gallagher Way has the Ivy Shop, the place for all Cubs apparel and merch, ten restaurants and bars, including the ever-popular Brick House Tavern, and Hotel Zachary across the street from the park (look west and you’ll see it!). Additionally, Gallagher Way hosts different events almost every day including yoga classes, movie nights, live music with Sundown Sessions, and a Thursday French Market full of cheeses, soap croissants, and other buttery and seasonal treats. Visit mid-November through December for the Bavarian-inspired Chriskindlemarket (see photo). Gallagher Way also has a warm-weather splash pad and a cold-weather ice rink.

Gallagher Way

Nicknamed "Mr. Sunshine: and "Mr. Cub", Ernest "Ernie" Banks is said to be the most cheerful player to ever hit for the Cubs. Born in 1931, he initially wasn’t interested in playing baseball, but after being bribed by his father to play catch, Banks slowly developed a deep love for the sport. By 1949 he was playing for a semi-pro baseball team in Dallas, and while this was put on hold in 1951 when he was drafted into the army during the Korean War, he was able to return to the States in 1953 to play for the Kansas City Monarchs, ending his season with a .347 batting average. That same year he signed with the Cubs, becoming their first African-American player. 

Banks became well-known for his quiet, but positive, demeanor. From interviews, it's learned that Banks was influenced by colleagues Jackie Robinson and Billy Williams who had also been impacted by segregation and the Jim Crow laws, which were still in effect during this time. Both Robinson and Williams encouraged Banks to stay quiet to prevent any racist members of management from removing Banks from the Cubs. Banks took their advice, but he did not lose his "sunshiny" demeanor. Over the years he became more vocal, especially about his love for baseball; his catchphrase, “Let’s play two!”, became popular at this time because it demonstrated how he loved baseball so much that he wanted to play a doubleheader, or two games back to back. 

Banks hit 19 home runs in 1954, and this number rose to 44 in 1955, which led to his recruitment for the All-Star Game and set a record for Cubs’ shortstops. In 1958 he was the National League’s MVP and in 1960 he received his first National League Gold Glove award, the first ever awarded to a Cub. Unfortunately, this winning award streak would end for a time in 1961 when he was moved to first base, which made him miserable and impacted his playing. This was made worse in 1962, when he received a concussion after being hit by a fastball and had to be benched until he recovered. However, he returned to the field triumphant, hitting three home runs and a double in one game. After struggling for a few years Banks was able to finish the 1968 season with 32 home runs and 83 runs batted in. On May 12th, 1970 Banks hit his 500th home run! Banks retired in 1971 with 512 home runs, 9,421 at-bats, and 4,706 bases- all Cubs records yet to be broken to this day.

In 1977 Banks was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and in 1982 his uniform, #14, was retired. When he wasn’t representing the Cubs at events, he spent his time working with his charity, the Live Above & Beyond Foundation, to provide healthcare to the elderly and youngsters. The statue in front of you was dedicated on March 21st, 2008. At the ceremony, Banks stated, "This is the epitome of American life to be able to have this honor bestowed upon me. Think about that. Just me. And when I'm no longer here, I'll still be here. It's amazing. This is amazing to me."

Ernie Banks Statue - “Let’s Play Two”

Billy Williams was born in Whistler, Alabama in 1938 and began playing professional baseball in 1956, joining the Cubs in 1959. While he initially struggled, he soon had a batting average of .277, and by 1961 he was selected to be the Rookie of the Year for the National Year because of his 25 home runs and 86 runs driven in. During this time his nickname “Sweet-Swinging Billy Williams” became popular, and for the rest of his career he was referred to as “Sweet Billy”. In May of 1964 he won the National League Player of the Month Award with his .455 batting average and continued to play left field, catching all balls that came his way. By this time he had begun what would become 1,117 consecutive games played, a streak that broke the National League’s records. 

By August of 1974 Williams had appeared in over 2,500 games with the Chicago Cubs. Unfortunately, it was also the year where he had the lowest RBI number of his career. In an effort to acquire better players, Williams was traded to the Oakland Athletics, where he played as a designated hitter. He then retired from baseball after the end of the 1976 season, instead becoming a coach for the Cubs’ minor league teams until 1980, when he coached for their major league team until 1982. He then returned to coach for the Cubs in 1986-87 and 1992-2001, becoming well-known for the interest he took in players and the time he spent getting to know them. 

“Oh, man, I just thought it was just kind of surreal to me that a Hall of Famer took that much interest in us,” former Cub Derrek Lee said in an interview with Marquee Sports Network in 2021, “But you know, he’s the biggest Cubs fan. And just a Hall of Famer in every sense of the word. Really enjoyed my time being around Billy without a doubt."

Williams was a six-time All-Star, had 392 home runs with the Cubs, and had over 4,262 total bases, all of which set records for Cubs' left-handed hitters. After he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987, his number #26 was retired, and in 2010 the statue before you was erected to honor Williams’ contributions to the Cubs. 

At the unveiling Williams said "When they told me about the unveiling in Chicago, I thought this day couldn't come here fast enough. This is beyond a dream for a kid growing up in Whistler, Alabama."

"Sweet-Swinging" Billy Williams Statue

Ron Santo was born in Seattle in 1940 and began playing baseball when he was 14, even making it to the 1954 Babe Ruth World Series with Seattle’s All-Star team. However, in 1958 he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and was given a very grim diagnosis: he would only live for another twenty-five years. Santo decided to make the most of those twenty-five years, and after teaching himself how to administer insulin injections and how to monitor his blood sugar based on his mood and energy levels, Santo was signed to the Chicago Cubs in 1959. 

Santo soon became the Cubs' most spectacular third baseman. In 1961 he broke a Cubs record by making 41 double plays at third base, this number rising to 374 by 1963 and then 393 in 1967, breaking the National League’s record twice. In 1969 Santo became well known for his heel click, which he did every time the Cubs won at Wrigley Field as a way to excite players and fans, though this heel click ended on September 2nd as the Cubs did not win another game of the 1969 season. 

He was the first player ever to veto a trade deal, which prevented him from being sent to the California Angels, though he was eventually traded to the Chicago White Sox before the 1974 season. Though Santo had consented to the trade and even had encouraged Cubs management to go for the trade, he was assigned to designated hitter duty, which frustrated him greatly and led to him retiring from baseball after the end of the season. 

On “Ron Santo Day”, which took place on August 28th, 1971 at Wrigley Field, Santo revealed his diabetes diagnosis to the world, and in 1979 the Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes in Chicago began, which raised over $65 million dollars to research diabetes in teenagers. In 1983, twenty-five years after his diabetes diagnosis, Santo was still in good health, proving to the world that with insulin and proper monitoring of one's sugar levels, a person with diabetes can live for twenty-five years and beyond after their diagnosis, giving those with diabetes new hope. 

For as well-known as Santo was for his record-breaking plays, he was even better known for his enthusiasm rivaling that of Ernie Banks. Santo’s excitement on the field helped him land a job as the color commentator for WGN’s Cubs broadcasts in 1990, where he worked alongside Pat Hughes and occasionally Harry Caray. Santo & Hughes' broadcasts, especially their Pat & Ron show, were incredibly popular thanks to Santo's mostly unbiased praise or criticism for the Cubs, depending on the situation. If the Cubs were losing he wasn't afraid to bash them, and if the Cubs were winning he wasn't afraid to cheer. 

Sadly, Santo's broadcasting career came to an end after he passed away in December 2010 due to complications from diabetes and bladder cancer. His funeral was held in Wrigley Field and his ashes were scattered across the field. In August of 2011, the statue in front of you was dedicated to Santo. During the ceremony, Hughes said this of Santo: "Wrigley Field was his favorite place on Earth." Santo was then elected into the Hall of Fame in 2011. He played a grand total of 2,243 MLB games.

Ron Santo Statue

Head north on Clark until you reach Waveland Avenue. Make a right onto Waveland Avenue and walk east until you reach where Seminary Ave intersects with Wavelend. Look down at the brickwalk.

One of the most successful promotional events the Cubs have ever done is their personalized brick pavers that line Wrigley Field on Waveland and Sheffield. For $160 you can have a brick in the sidewalk of Wrigley Field engraved with a custom message, and receive a matching one to keep in your home. Each brick is placed in different sections around the park, some even around larger stones engraved with the names of players, such as Sammy Sosa or Billy Williams. Since 2006 the Cubs have sold over 12,000 bricks.

The bricks have prayers, jokes, hopes, and simple messages like “Go, Cubs, Go!” Many have inscriptions for fans’ families, such as a brick that reads “#1 Dad, #1 Cubs Fan, George Adams” or “In Memory of Melvin Routh, Go Cubbies!” These bricks have become incredibly important to the families of fans; after the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, many brought their bricks to Wrigley as a way for family members who had passed to celebrate the win.

In 2015 the Wrigley Field underwent a renovation, during which many of the bricks were moved to their present locations. The Cubs also revealed to brick owners that their current bricks at Wrigley Field would be removed and destroyed and that a new, duplicate brick bearing the same message would be laid. However, during this time hundreds of the engraved bricks suddenly appeared in a Pontiac, IL landfill, and even more were given away to Pontiac residents. Fans and brick owners were outraged when this was first reported, and within days the Cubs sent messages out to brick owners, explaining that they would be opening an investigation into “how some of the pavers were taken from the disposal site without authorization.” It was quickly discovered that Republic Waste Services, a waste collection agency, had accidentally removed the bricks and dumped them in the wrong location. This situation was quickly resolved, and by Opening Day in 2016, all of the bricks were replaced and laid, though what became of the bricks in Pontiac is unknown.

Sidewalk Bricks

Continue on Waveland Avenue east until you reach the intersection with Kenmore Avenue. This is where the secondary action is outside the ballpark during games.

Waveland Avenue has long been a popular part of Wrigleyville for fans and locals. For over 100 years home runs hit out of the ballpark by players have landed on Waveland Avenue, and have occasionally gone through the buildings on Waveland Avenue (Is there a special type of Homeowners Insurance for when the Cubs break your windows?). Fans have lined up along the street for years hoping to catch a home run ball from Cubs greats, and since 1916 fans have sat on the rooftops of buildings in Wrigleyville to watch Cubs games. In the 1980s the Cubs rose in popularity and with them did attendance on these rooftops, which led to the Lakeview Baseball Club being formed. This club represented the owners of all buildings offering rooftop seating, the first building to begin selling tickets for views of the game, and while they initially struggled financially, their ticket sales grew dramatically in the late 1990s when the Cubs made it to the playoffs for the first time in almost ten years. 

The Ricketts Family, the owners of the Cubs since 2009, greatly disliked the Lakeview Baseball Club and how they were making profits off of the Ricketts’ team. Soon after, purchasing the team, Ricketts attempted to limit sales for the rooftop clubs by wrapping the exterior fences of Wrigley Field in black windscreens to block the Club's view into the ballpark, despite there being a previous agreement in 2004 giving the team a percentage of rooftop sales. However, fans, players, and writers alike slammed the windscreens, many criticizing the Ricketts for attacking the ‘underdog’ rooftop club. In 2015 the Ricketts began purchasing the rooftop buildings to control the market, but this led to a dispute with the MLB Players Association, though this was quickly resolved. By 2016 the Ricketts owned eleven rooftop seating properties, turning them into the Wrigley Rooftops and remodeling the buildings to not only include rooftop seating but also indoor lounges, bars, suites with TVs, and outdoor eating areas.

Waveland Avenue

Keep walking east on Waveland to the corner of Sheffield at the bleacher entrance to find the statue of Harry Caray.

Harry Caray is the most famous Cubs broadcaster of all time, spending a total of 16 years announcing games for the Chicago Cubs. His fame not only comes from his iconic voice and antics but also from his ability to relate to his listeners, especially the working-class baseball fans of Chicagoland. Caray himself began working at the age of 8 when he began selling newspapers to support his family. He was also a baseball fan from a young age - during high school he played as a shortstop and second baseman for Webster High School, and every chance he got he watched the St. Louis Cardinals play at Sportsman’s Park. 

However, he found that the games he listened to on the radio were not nearly as exciting as those he attended in person, so he decided to become a broadcaster and bring the energy of in-person games to the radio broadcasts of games. He soon became the sports director of WKZO in Kalamazoo, Michigan during the mid-1940s. During his time there two of his most famous phrases came into existence: “Holy cow!” and “It might be…it could be…it IS…a home run!” 

In 1945 he became the broadcaster for the St. Louis Cardinals, where he broadcasted games until 1969. One of Caray’s most memorable moments from his time with the Cardinals came after Caray was hit by a car in 1968. Both of his legs were broken in the incident, and when he returned to announce for the Cardinals, fans were panicked to see him enter the field using two canes. However, he then threw them aside and walked to the broadcast booth by himself, which sent fans wild. 

After spending twenty-five seasons with the Cardinals, Caray went to the Oakland A’s for a season before accepting a job with the Chicago White Sox in 1971. By 1977 he found a solid partner in Jimmy Piersall, and the duo continued to broadcast together until 1981. During this time Caray began his seventh-inning stretch tradition after his singing was secretly broadcasted to fans, a tradition that he carried over to the Chicago Cubs. Caray & Piersall also found a knack for angering players and management with their comments, especially when they purposefully mispronounced the names of players. When Caray reached the Cubs, his face and voice were broadcast to over thirty million homes, which was entertaining to fans of his outrageous comments. Caray broadcasted for the Cubs for fifteen seasons until his passing in 1998. 

The twelve-foot statue in front of you depicts Harry Caray rising out of a miniature version of Wrigley Field, pointing his microphone at the crowd as he counts off the seventh-inning stretch. Caray is dressed in a Cubbie jacket and his iconic thick-framed glasses. The statue is made of white bronze and stands atop a granite base. The statue was created by Omri Amrany and Lou Cella of the Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt-Amrany and the statue was dedicated in 1999 at the corner of Addison and Sheffield, one year after Caray’s death. In 2014 the statue was removed for restoration and moved to its present location outside Center Field.

Harry Caray Statue

The W flag is one of the most well-known symbols to come from Wrigley Field. The flag began to be raised over the scoreboard during the 1937 season as a way to signal to Chicagoans that the Cubs had won their game, as back then not everyone could attend a game or listen to the outcome on the radio. It was also used to excite fans and shame the opposing players - What better way to celebrate your win than flying your flag high above your enemies? 

That all being said, the flag didn’t always fly in Wrigley, and it wasn’t always white with blue letting. During the 1930s the original blue flag with a white W printed on it actually flew on the back of boats owned by the Wrigley family, who owned the Cubs and gave Wrigley Field its name. These boats transported players to Catalina Island off the coast of California, which served as the Cubs’ spring training facility until 1951. When the Cubs came back from spring training in 1937 they brought the flag with them, installing it on the scoreboard and letting it fly high when the Cubs won. 

In 1980 the flag’s colors were changed to white with blue lettering to better match the uniform flags that began to be hung from the poles, and since 1998 fans have been flying the Win flag at Wrigley Field. This became especially popular in 2007 when fans began waving the flags in an attempt to get on TV. 

Along with the W flag comes the Loss flag, which is a blue flag with a white ‘L’ on it. This flag is flown when the Cubs lose and it is often used by the fans of opposing teams to mock the Cubs, especially those of St. Louis origin.

Look up to see if the W flag is flying! You might need to cross the street and view it from in front of Murphy's Bleachers. It's also common to see them in windows and flying on porches of local homes.

Continue heading south on Sheffield until you come to the Lakeview Baseball Club where you'll see a sign: Eamus Catuli. 

Eamus Catuli translates from Latin as "Let's go little whelps" but more loosely as “Let’s go little bears!” The phrase was painted on a sign, and displayed on the building in 1996 and has been there since. The sign was created by Bob Racky, who owned the building and managed the Lakeview Baseball Club.

Along with the Eamus Catuli sign there is the AC sign, which counts how many years it has been since the team won the NL division title, the NL pennant, and the World Series. The AC part of the sign is short for Anno Catulorum, which is Latin for “In the Year of the Cubs”. These two signs together were used in a promotion by Racky where if a fan correctly guessed the meaning of both signs they would win a one-year membership to the Lakeview Baseball Club; it took one year for the sign to be correctly deciphered. Since 1996 the sign has only been removed twice, once in 2012, and again in 2023.

FX and Hulu’s The Bear is currently taking the world by storm, already deemed one of the top ten shows of the year by the American Film Institute. The show follows young chef Carmy as he must manage The Beef, a sandwich shop in Chicago, which is the actual home of the famous Mr. Beef on Orleans. 

Carmy's chef team of Sydney, Tina, and Marcus, along with manager Richie, struggle to make The Beef, and later The Bear restaurants succeed. In season two, chef Sydney embarks on a journey across Chicagoland to visit the best restaurants and gain inspiration for her "Chaos Menu", which will combine dishes, flavors, and foods from around the globe. 

Now you can embark on Sydney’s journey yourself with this recreation of Sydney’s "Chaos Menu: Crawl! Check out the restaurants that inspired The Bear's chefs and discover the history of these restaurants, how they connect to The Bear’s characters, and what delicious foods they have for you to devour. 

You may start and stop this tour at anytime. Due to the distances between restaurants, public transportation or a car is recommended. Hours for the restaurant are listed on each stop.

The restaurant inspiration for The Bear, Mr. Beef, has a long history. The shop started as a stand-in 1963 by Carl Bonavolanto Jr and Tony Ozzauto. With $16 between them, they served beef sandwiches and hotdogs based on recipes from Ozzuto’s mom. In 1979 they sold the business to Joe Zucchero, who eventually purchased the River North building from Bonavolanto and Ozzauto in the 1980s. During this time, Bonovolanto continued to work at Mr. Beef to help both families get along after the transfer of ownership, but they weren’t always cordial behind the scenes. He eventually left and opened another stand, named the Original Mr. Beef, in Homer Glen, but it shut down in 2021 due to the Pandemic. 

Joe Zucchero's son, Chris continued to run Mr. Beef. The next-gen Zucchero spent hours inside the store working and playing with his good friend Christopher Storer, creator of The Bear. Zucchero and Storer had been friends since kindergarten, with Storer often directing reenactments of famous shows and movies for him and his friends to do. After he graduated high school, Storer continued to visit Mr. Beef and eventually showed up with his crew asking to film. 

“Yeah, absolutely. Knock yourself out.” Chris Zucchero had responded and was the springboard of Mr. Beef’s fame from popular local staple to international screen fame. Mr. Beef had already seen national fame thanks to Joe Zucchero’s friendship with Jay Leno, and later Jimmy Fallon, and had been featured on numerous WGTV news segments and Food Network interviews since the early 1990s.

After filming the pilot and receiving a green light, a replica of Mr. Beef was entirely rebuilt on a soundstage at Cinespace Chicago studio, in the North Lawndale neighborhood. Joe Zucchero was humbled and proud to have his shop featured in The Bear, but he was still very protective of his restaurant, especially after The Bear’s team borrowed Mr. Beef’s benches and carried them out through the store’s windows. During filming of season one, Joe Zucchero was in the hospital being treated for cancer. Quite worried about the safety of his restaurant, he said to his son, jokingly of course, “Tell that skinny [Storer], if he ruins anything in our restaurant, I will crawl from this hospital and kill him.”

Luckily, Joe Zucchero didn’t have to, and after season one of The Bear finished filming they returned the benches. And the signs. And some condiment bottles, too. 

The Bear was incredibly successful, increasing Mr. Beef’s sales from 300 sandwiches a day to over 800. Joe and Chris Zucchero were excited but determined to keep their restaurant the same and not let the fame get to their heads. Sadly, Joe Zucchero passed away in March of 2023. “He was a magnificent human being. He was charismatic. He loved his restaurant…He loved his family, his children,” Chris Zucchero said in an interview with WTTW.

Recently, Mr. Beef catered numerous release parties for season two of The Bear, handing out hundreds of Italian beef sandwiches, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, milkshakes, malts, and more to the cast and crew. 

If this is your first Italian Beef experience, know that you'll be asked if you'd like your "beef" either "hot or sweet". "Hot" means that it's topped with the famous local Italian-American relish of chopped vegetables and oil called giardiniera (pronounced “jar-din-air-ah”), and if you like heat-spicy foods, this is for you. If hot peppers make you sweat through your shirt, "sweet" is your choice where the sandwich is topped with steamed green pepper, and is really not sweet but adds a nice vegetal layer of flavor and texture. 

Mr. Beef is open Monday - Saturday from 10AM to 4PM. Dishes range in price from $9.15 to $18.25.
